Overview
The Blender development team hosted a Geometry Nodes workshop on 22 October 2025, shortly after the Blender Conference. The meeting gathered core developers and community contributors (Molecular Nodes author Brady Johnston and Entagma’s Manuel Casasola Merkle) to finalize a set of features slated for the upcoming Blender 5.0 release.
Key Features Moving Out of Experimental
- Closures and Bundles – Now stable and usable in both Geometry Nodes and Shader Nodes, with repeat‑zone support.
- Socket Shapes – Updated visual socket shapes are officially supported.
- Volume Grid Nodes – New volume‑grid nodes are no longer experimental, enabling direct volume manipulation inside Geometry Nodes.
New Modifiers and Built‑In Assets
Blender 5.0 introduces six Geometry Nodes‑based modifiers that provide out‑of‑the‑box solutions for flexible arrays, scattering, and instancing. A new “packing” system allows linked data‑blocks to be stored inside the .blend file, making essential assets self‑contained.
Lists and Fields
An initial implementation of lists has been merged as an experimental feature. Nodes can now create lists from fields and closures, supporting multiple inputs and outputs. This paves the way for simpler mesh‑topology workflows.
Physics Integration via Bundles
The workshop outlined a roadmap for declarative physics solvers. A bundle‑based API will let users describe forces, colliders, and constraints, while solver nodes (starting with an XPBD hair solver) manipulate the simulation world. Collision handling discussions favored BVH‑tree lookups over SDFs for higher accuracy.
Viewer Node Redesign and UV Tangent
Implementation of the new viewer node design discussed in the previous workshop has been completed. Additionally, a UV Tangent node now provides direct access to mesh tangent vectors.
Future Directions
Other topics included modal node tools, multi‑object node tools, zoomed‑out node‑editor drawing, and default‑input enhancements via node‑group defaults. The community was invited to contribute mockups and feedback.
